The transmission, often called the gimbal, is the link between the gear box and the wheels. The transmission is protected by bellows, and bathed in grease.
Signs of wear may be detectable; a defective gimbal/ transmission may emit repetitive knocking noises. Other parts may be affected by a worn transmission, so it is not a part to neglect when checking over or maintaining a vehicle. To prevent a transmission from rapidly wearing out, be sure to check the bellows and grease levels for optimum transmission operation. It is recommended that you change the transmission box fluid roughly every 60,000 km (or 37,000 miles), but these recommendations vary between manufacturers.
